So I've had my Zune for a while now. The hardware is really good. It's large enough, 30 GB, to put my entire collection on it, and the background can be customized, etc, etc. But the software, well let's just be blunt, sucked. It messed up the tag on just about every one of my mp3s. It took about four straight hours on four days to get them straightened out. I ended up using the zAlternator program so that I could sync using Windows Media Player (which I think should be an option with the Zune since it's a Microsoft product, but hey, what do I know?). So, needless to say, I was gun shy about using the Zune software for fear of having to redo all of my tags once again, even though Microsoft was assuring that they had that problem fixed.
Yesterday a new update came out that added a lot of features that, in my opinion, should have been there in the first place. Autoplaylists (Smart Playlists for you iPodians), better metadata editing, browse by genre, gapless playback, and enhancements to the Social. They got it right. I decided to bite the bullet and download the new software and give it one more try. I was seriously going to chuck the whole thing if it messed up my tags again! The software, as far as I can tell, is spot-on. Everything works like it should. I had forgotten how much I missed the autoplaylist feature when I had my iPod. I was also able to easily fix the last remaining incorrect tags.
This morning when I got in the car and hooked it up, I noticed every song skipped randomly. So, of course I'm thinking s!@#, now the hardware's messed up or that somehow the software borked all of my mp3s...I Googled "zune skipping" and found some stuff on the backlight from a long time ago and another guy said after a reboot (Back + Top) his worked. So I tried the reboot and listened with some headphones and so far, so good. I'll have to try it out in the car in a little bit.
So I guess in summation...I'm loving my Zune right now. How long this love fest will last is anyone's guess, but I'm going to try and enjoy it for now.
Edit: The reboot did indeed fix the skipping. What is it with Microsoft and rebooting to make the program work?
