From Newsvine: On Jan. 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center, killing all seven of its crew members: flight commander Francis R. "Dick" Scobee; pilot Michael Smith; Ronald McNair; Ellison Onizuka; Judith Resnik; Gregory Jarvis; and schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe.
This is one of the days I remember clearly what I was doing when I learned of it. Some of the older classes were actually watching when it happened, but somehow our class didn't find out. My mom told me as soon as I got off of the bus. I remember crying. We were all paying closer attention than usual because of the teacher that was part of the crew.
